Malignant Neoplasms of the Floor of the Mouth: A clinical Study

Abstract
We analyzed retrospectively 90 patients of floor of mouth cancer who had visited Korea Cancer Center Hospital from January 1985 to December 1992.
The most prevalent age group was 6th decades and its median age was 58 years. The sex ratio was M : F=5.4 : 1. 78 patients were smoker and 73 patients smoked more than 1 pack per day. 72 patients were drinker and 46 patients were heavy drinker.
Tumor
staging by AJCC classification, 1992, distributed with stage ¥°7, stage¥±21, stage¥²21, stage¥³41. Clinically, cervical lymph node metastases were 48(53.3%)cases. Distant metastases were 3 cases, multiple primary cancer were 3 cases.
Histopathologically, the squamous cell carcinoma (82 cases) was most commom, followed by the adenoid cystic carcinoma (5 cases), mucoepidermoid carcinoma (2 cases) and adenocarcinoma (1 case).
Six patients were received surgery, 11 patients radiation therapy, and 35 patients combined therapy. Early stage group(stage ¥°&¥±) was treated mainly by surgery or combined therapy, advanced stage group(stage¥²&¥³ ) by combined therapy or
radiation
therapy. Overall 5 year survival rate by actuarial method was 36.1% in definitive treatment group(52 patients). In surgery group, 5 year survival rate was 59.5%, in radiation therapy group 16.4%, in combined therapy group 38.7%. 5 year survival
rates in
definitive treatment group by stage ¥°to¥³were 75.0%, 69.6%, 32.3% and 10.9%.
